The Platinum Brush and Platinum Pencil

Each year, three artists who create realistic paintings are awarded a Platinum Brush and three artists who draw realistically only are awarded a Platinum Pencil.

What is a Platinum Brush and what is a Platinum Pencil?
A Platinum Brush is an award given to artists who paint realistically. A Platinum Pencil is an award given to artists who draw realistically only.
The awards not only recognize the artistic excellence of the artists to whom the awards are given, but also reflect the appreciation in broad expert circles for the work of the artists to whom the awards are given.

Who can be distinguished with a Platinum Brush?
Platinum Brushes are awarded by Masters of Realism to Dutch artists who paint realistically, are not a Master of Realism, and yet also paint at a high level.

Who can be distinguished with a Platinum Pencil?

Platinum Pencils are awarded by Masters of Realism to Dutch artists who draw only realistically.

Setup
Platinum Brushes and Platinum Pencils are awarded once a year. The process towards awarding Platinum Brushes and Platinum Pencils has two rounds.

First round: Everyone can nominate their favorite artists. A maximum of 2 for the award of a Platinum Brush and a maximum of 2 for the award of a Platinum Pencil. Period April to 31 July.

Second round: Masters of Realism vote on 1 nominated artist per category. The 3 artists who receive the most votes per category are awarded Platinum Brushes and Platinum Pencils. Period August 15 to October 15.

Announcement
The artists who are awarded a Platinum Brush or a Platinum Pencil will be announced in early 2025. Artists who have been awarded a Platinum Brush or a Platinum Pencil are honorably mentioned on the website of the Masters of Realism.

The artist who receives the most points in the ‘realistic painting’ category will be invited to join the 250 Masters of Realism without having to pay ballotage costs.

Winner Platinum Pencil 2024

The honorary title The Platinum Pencil 2024 has gone to Loes Botman.

After studying at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Loes Botman specialized in drawing with pastel. The simplicity of the material appeals to her. She is a true artist and prefers to let all the colors flow directly from her hands.

Winner Platinum Brush 2024

Lisa Wiersma is the winner of the honorary title The Platinum Brush 2024.

Lisa Wiersma started at the art academy, but graduated in art history from the University of Amsterdam. She now enjoys working as a painter and art historian. She can make good use of her love for various (historical) manufacturing techniques of sculpture, drawings, prints and paintings in both fields.
