With the exhibition Rivaling Reality: 60 Years of Photorealism, the Museum Frieder Burda explores one of the most programmatic movements in figurative painting since World War II. This stylistic direction, which emerged in the United States beginning in the mid-1960s, stands for an art that embraces a photographic view of the world, reproducing it illusionistically through painterly means. Over ninety visually stunning pieces by more than thirty artists from across six decades show how this pursuit of painterly realism was redefined with the utmost technical precision—from early works like those of Robert Bechtle, Richard Estes, Ralph Goings, and Audrey Flack to the international developments of the present day.
